Too far too fast for U.S. stocks?
The chase by Marty Cej:

The week begins with the S&P 500 at its highest level in five years and just 3 percent from a record high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has climbed 8.4 percent so far this year while the Nasdaq has advanced 7.4 percent and the S&P/TSX Composite has gained 3 percent. Too far too fast for U.S. stocks? Room to catch up for Canadian stocks? Has the great rotation out of bonds and other income-generating investments into riskier stocks begun? Do fourth-quarter earnings and first-quarter forecasts justify the gains so far? Will Canadian resource stocks continue to hold back the broader market? Those are the questions investors will be asking this week and our guests will be answering.

Some of the more interesting responses to those questions will come from billionaire investor Jim Rogers, who sits down with Howard Green today at 12:30 pm Eastern. Rogers has just authored a new book and will offer investing insights and economic, political and social analysis, focusing in large part on the opportunities to be had in emerging markets.

Today is quiet on the earnings front but that's simply a lull before an earnings flood through the week. Keep an eye on the following names as the market sets its positions ahead of the numbers. Tomorrow, we'll see results from TransCanada, Absolute Software and Coca-Cola. Wednesday, things pick up on the gold front with earnings from Agnico-Eagle and Kinross but we also see numbers from Sun Life, Talisman, Saputo, Deere & Co., Comcast and Cisco. Canadian oil and gold stocks will dominate our earnings coverage later in the week when we examine reports from Barrick and Goldcorp, Precision Drilling, EnCana and Cenovus. For Canadian stock investors, this will be the key earnings week.

Colgate warned this morning that a weaker Venezuelan currency will cut as much as 7 cents a share from quarterly earnings through 2013. The warning won't be the last from a global heavyweight with a broad footprint. Currencies will preoccupy the markets this week amid speculation the Group of Seven nations are preparing a statement to assure everyone that a currency war is not at hand, even though many nations are doing just about everything they can to drive their currencies lower in a bid to stoke growth. G7 finance ministers are set to meet on Feb. 15 in Moscow so a statement that promises members won't target their own currencies could well arrive before that date.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today begins a public consultation to obtain Canadians' views on a new code for retail wireless services, such as mobile phones and other personal mobile devices. In its own words, the CRTC says it is asking consumers to "to assist us in developing a code that will help them better understand their rights as consumers and the responsibilities of wireless companies." The hearings continue all week. Paul Bagnell will report live today from Ottawa. BNN is owned by Bellmedia, a unit of BCE.

Cameco topped expectations when it reported earnings late last week. CEO Tim Gitzel sits down with us at 2:00 pm Eastern.

Every morning Managing Editor Marty Cej writes a "chase note" to BNN's editorial staff listing the stories and events that will be in the spotlight that day.
